Westport Country Playhouse – Historic Theatre & Cultural Landmark

Founded in 1931 in a converted 19th-century barn, the Playhouse quickly became one of the country’s most important summer stock theaters — a launchpad and creative laboratory for productions that often moved to Broadway. Over the decades, it welcomed legendary performers including Paul Newman, who later served as Artistic Director, Joanne Woodward, James Earl Jones, Christopher Plummer, and Gene Wilder. The Playhouse has also staged works by major American playwrights such as Neil Simon and Arthur Miller, reinforcing its role in shaping the American theatrical canon.

Today, guests can not only attend performances but also experience behind-the-scenes tours, offering insight into the historic barn structure, backstage areas, and the rich legacy of productions that have passed through its stage. It remains a living piece of American cultural history — where storytelling, artistry, and community continue to thrive.
